The Óbuda Museum is located in the former Zichy Castle, which is under monument protection, on the old-fashioned, cobbled Main square of the town. It is a relatively young institution: it was founded as a local history collection on the 100th anniversary of the unification of the city, in 1973, and was granted museum status in 1996. The initial collection concept was basically determined by the large-scale transformation of the district. The capital development plan created in the 1960s and 1970s aimed to transform Óbuda into a modern district. For the district, this meant an almost complete renovation (except for the immediate surroundings of today’s Fő tér – Szentlélek tér), which was accompanied by a complete change of the cityscape, the transformation of the material environment and traditional living conditions. This change created the opportunity to establish the core collection, to collect and preserve the memories of old Óbuda and Békásmegyer, which was annexed to the district in 1950. Over the decades, the institution’s material related to local history has grown into a prestigious and diverse collection. Currently, we have four permanent and annually renewed temporary exhibitions giving a diverse picture of Óbuda.
